开幕日距离这位巴黎女艺术家2010年5月31日在其纽约的家中辞世已有3年半，她的蜘蛛雕塑在2年前卖出了1070万美金的天价，这是至今为止世界各国女艺术家卖价最高的作品，更为重要的是，她的蜘蛛还在世界各地爬行、矗立，尽管它的创作者已经不在人世。
1911年6月25日生于法国巴黎的路易斯-布尔乔亚，1938年嫁给美国艺术史家罗伯特·戈德华特（Robert Goldwater）后移居纽约。1945年，在纽约的Bertha Schaefer画廊举办了首次个人展览，从此一发不可收拾，到2013年为止，已经在世界数十个国家举办了312场个展，在她去世后，势头依然不减。
给她带来震撼性名声的作品《蜘蛛》(《妈妈》)系列金属雕塑创作于1996年之后，那时她已经85岁，她创作了庞大而有气势的蜘蛛形象，以象征母亲，因为在她眼里母亲“如蜘蛛般聪明、有耐心、干净、有用”。
布尔乔亚说：蜘蛛是我母亲的颂歌。她是我最好的朋友。像蜘蛛一样，我母亲是一名纺织女工。我家的生意是修复挂毯，我母亲负责车间工作。妈妈和蜘蛛一样聪明。蜘蛛是吃蚊子的友好使者。我们知道，蚊子传播疾病，不为人所需要。所以蜘蛛是有益的，它保护人，就像我母亲。
布尔乔亚的母亲在她21岁时病逝，令她悲痛欲绝，试图跳河自杀。

Tate Modern, UK - Acquiring this sculpture is considered one of the Tate Modern's historical moments. Maman was first displayed outside the gallery in 2000. It was received with the mixed reactions of amazement and amusement. The sculpture owned by the Tate Modern is the only one made from stainless steel
National Gallery of Canada, Canada - The National Gallery of Canada acquired the sculpture in 2005 for 3.2 million dollars. At that time, the price was deemed excessive by some critics, as it took around the third of the annual budget of the gallery.

Qatar National Convention Center, Qatar - The Maman sculpture found a permanent home at the Qatar National Convention Centre in 2012. The exhibit was organised by the Qatar Museums Authority.
